Why Adult Women Are Falling in Love With Heels Dancing (And It Has Nothing to Do With Looking Sexy)

Honestly? When most women hear "heels dance class" for the first time, they laugh it off.

Too intimidating. Too sexy. Not for me.

And then they try it. And everything changes.

We see it every single week at Empower, women walking in unsure, a little nervous, maybe already planning their excuse to leave early. And then the music comes on, something clicks, and by the end of the hour they're asking when the next class is.

There's something about heels dancing that just does something to you. And we've been trying to put our finger on exactly what that is for a while now.

So what actually is heels dancing?

Heels dance pulls from commercial, jazz, and contemporary styles, all done in heels. It's expressive and powerful, and it feels completely different to any other type of movement. It's not a performance. It's not about being watched. It's just about how it feels to move that way.

A lot of women come in expecting it to feel over the top or uncomfortable. Most of them are surprised by how quickly it just feels like them.

It's not about looking a certain way

This is the bit we really want women to hear.

Heels dancing isn't about being sexy for anyone else. It's about finding a kind of confidence in your body that a lot of us were never really taught to have. The kind where you take up space because you want to, not because someone's watching.

For a lot of the women in our community, that feeling is genuinely new. And it's a big deal.

What your first class actually looks like

You don't need to have danced before. You don't even need heels to start, trainers are absolutely fine while you find your feet (literally).

Our adult dance classes in Cheshire are kept small so everyone gets proper attention, and the energy in the room is always more supportive than anything else. Nobody is performing. Nobody is judging. Everyone's just there to move and have a good time.

It sounds simple, but for a lot of women it's the first time in a long time they've done something purely for themselves. And that matters.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need any dance experience to join a heels class?
Not at all. Most of the women who come to Empower have never danced as an adult, and some haven't danced since school. Our classes are designed to be beginner friendly and you'll be taught everything from scratch. You just need to show up.

Do I need to wear heels?
No especially not to begin with. Trainers are completely fine while you get comfortable with the movement. We'd much rather you feel confident and safe on your feet than worry about footwear before you've even started.

What do I wear?
Whatever you feel good in. Most of our girls come in comfortable gym or dancewear but there's no dress code. Wear what makes you feel like yourself.

I'm quite shy, will I feel out of place?
Hand on heart, this is the most common worry we hear and the one that disappears the fastest. The Empower community is genuinely one of the warmest groups of women you'll find. Nobody is there to judge. Everyone is just there to dance.

Where are Empower Dance classes held?
We run women's dance classes in Knutsford, Northwich, and Biddulph. Visit our schedule page to find a class near you.
